Four players on NC Battalion’s squad had an eventful weekend away from the team. Ross Holden, Connor Mazolewski, Drew Tepping and Michael Benador also start for the SDSU Men’s Club Soccer A team. They traveled to the 2016 National Showcase Tournament in Sacramento over the weekend and returned back to San Diego as champions. It is the first time that a team won back-to-back championships. “We are extremely proud to have won the tournament once again and feel great about the work we put in the entire semester. Winning the San Diego Cup, the Southern Division League, and finally, the National Showcase was an amazing accomplishment by this group of guys,” said Coach Eric Wohl. Midfielder Ross Holden also took home MVP of the tournament. Congratulations gentleman!
Game 1: SDSU vs UC Davis
SDSU opened the weekend vs UC Davis drawing 1-1 in a rain soaked 8 a.m. morning. SDSU came out in the first half with a goal from Zack Warner. 10 minutes in to the first half UC Davis equalized with an unfortunate own goal. SDSU dominated the game in the pouring rain but couldn’t find the game winner.
Game 2: SDSU vs University of Arizona
SDSU needed to beat or tie UofA to advance and came out early ready to play. SDSU ultimately defeated Arizona 3-0 advancing to the quarter finals.
Game 3 – Quarterfinals: SDSU vs Cal State Long Beach
In a re-match of the 2015 National Showcase semi-finals, SDSU was paired vs CSU Long Beach in a Saturday afternoon game. SDSU defeated Long Beach 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
Game 4 – SemiFinals: SDSU vs UCSD
The semi-finals paired up two San Diego Colleges that have had a continued rivalry for many years. In a hard fought battle, SDSU found the game winner in the first 15 minutes of the second half with an awesome volley by Arturo Hoyos from 20 yards out that would ultimately put SDSU in the finals.
Game 5 – National Showcase Championship: SDSU vs Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
In a rematch of the 2015 National Showcase, the SDSU men defeated Cal Poly Slo 1-0 to bring home the 2016 National Showcase. The game was a hard fought battle with each team generating chances throughout the game. SDSU finally broke through with 8 minutes to go on a free kick from Ross Holden that was helped with a deflection in the box to get past the SLO goalkeeper and put SDSU up 1-0, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
