Chapter One: First Year In The Books For Battalion

by Nate Abaurrea Call it a debut. Call it an inaugural season. It was a club being born. It was a club growing by the day. It was a tale of camaraderie, commitment, and an unbreakable desire to succeed. It was 2016 for the North County Battalion. In the first chapter of this ongoing Battalion story, you had a vision. You had a dream come to fruition through endless hours of hard work from numerous individuals, people who came together for a common good. Through the efforts of so many behind the scenes, Club Founder and Co-Owner Jason Barbato saw [...]

Battalion Fall to East Bay FC At Home

With much anticipation, the East Bay FC Stompers traveled approximately 500 miles to visit fellow 2016 NPSL playoff contender this past weekend. This match, the fourth in a lineup of fall exhibitions, proved to be the toughest battle yet for the Battalion. Donning their white kits, NCB found themselves down two goals in the first half and were never able to recover. Despite their best efforts to change the course of the game, the final score was 2-5 in favor of the visiting Easy Bay FC Stompers. Battalion looked fresh in the opening minutes of the game, controlling possession and [...]

Battalion Look To Get Back on Track

NC Battalion opened up the third match of their fall campaign back at Del Norte Stadium to face US Open Cup challenger Orange County FC on Sunday. After a tough loss in last week’s charity exhibition match to the San Diego Sockers, Battalion was looking to get back on track. The visiting OCFC, however, had other plans in mind. In the early minutes of the match, OCFC center forward Castro slipped past his markers and took a menacing shot on goalkeeper James Stroud. Stroud was up to the task and stretched a big left hand to save the shot. From [...]

Battalion and Sockers Team Up For Charity

On an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, the San Diego Sockers took their play outdoors for some fresh air and a match against the Battalion's fall squad. North County Battalion, who kept a clean sheet last weekend at Del Norte Stadium, fell to the Sockers 1-3 in its second match of the fall development season. Defender Rory Sutherland scored his first goal for Battalion after joining the squad earlier this year. Normally, Rory is in the backfield protecting opposing teams from getting past the defense. When Battalion has a corner kick, the 6'2" San Diego native, is right there and ready [...]

An Open Letter To Our Battalion Family

Dear Battalion Family: Time flies. Time flies when you’re having fun. Time flies when you’re working hard. Time flies when you’re reliving the past. Time flies when you’re planning for the future. The flight of time, however, is not a good excuse for not keeping in touch with friends or family. We haven’t really kept up with our NC Battalion family while we’ve been having fun, reliving the past, working hard, or planning for the future. Rest assured though, we’ve been doing all of that and more. Since our season ended up in Sonoma, we’ve taken some time off to [...]

NC Battalion Gears Up For Friendlies

Since wrapping up our inaugural season competing in the National Premier Soccer League, San Diego’s North County Battalion soccer club have been active. It was hard for us not to remain in motion, riding the wave of momentum generated by our inaugural campaign in which we finished as top scorers and in second place overall in the Southwest conference, and reached the round of 16 in a run into the playoffs of a league that consists of over 80 clubs scattered across the nation. The high-octane style of soccer that the team played on the field was a reflection of [...]

Inaugural Season Comes to End In 2nd Round Playoff Loss

The trip from San Diego to Santa Rosa took a little over 10 hours including traffic. For parts of the game, the Battalion looked like the trip had taken its toll. A great inaugural season that included a second-place division finish and a 10 game unbeaten streak ended when the Battalion fell to the Sonoma County Sol 3-0. Sonoma’s defense played outstanding and kept the Battalion off the scoreboard all game long. On defense, the Battalion gave up some goals that they surely would like to have back. Those two things combined for a playoff exit for the boys from [...]
